Somebody has to be the southernmost city in Europe, and to grab the title we’d suggest living on an island in the Mediterranean. For now, at least, the title holder is Limassol on Crete! This is a modern city that also holds its history close, with an Old Town neighborhood that features Limassol Castle. Today that’s home to the Medieval Museum of Cyprus, but its history dates back far enough to be the wedding site of the first King Richard — close to 1,000 years ago. Greek and Roman ruins from even earlier — and relatively newer architecture dating only as far back as the Crusades — are among the top sights, but modern-day pleasures like Limassol’s public garden and zoo, plus wineries in the nearby village of Omodos, are there for the savoring as well.
