Even the smallest of provinces have a capital city, and Charlottetown serves that role for Prince Edward Island. Canada’s littlest actually had an outsized role in the country’s history — you could basically call this the birthplace of Canada! This happened at a conference in 1864 at Province House, which is still home to the Prince Edward Island’s legislature. But that’s far from the only historic building you’ll find here — among the Victorian architecture is a humble farmhouse that you might not guess inspired the beloved children’s novel Anne of Green Gables… except that Anne fans flock there today and it’s been made a National Historic Site! But with all the talk of buildings, don’t miss the outdoors — PEI and its namesake national park play host to incredible hiking, biking and white-sand beach strolling.
